My main artistic interest is in the area of Portraiture, both human and animal. For me nothing captures the essence of the spirit like a portrait. I love the way a portrait captures a moment in the life of the subject and perhaps makes you wonder about them, who they are or were and what that person (or animal) was about. I hope that when I produce a portrait I am creating more than just a static image, but something that causes the observer to think about the subject and feel something of their spirit and emotion.

My favorite medium to work in is oil paint. The usual way that I work on a painting is first to mark the canvas with some principle guide lines from a reference.Then I build up the form and lighting of the piece in various shades of grey oil paint using white for the highlights.Only after this black and white painting is done do I begin to layer in the colors and produce the final image using many glazes of oil paint. In between glazes I allow the paint to dry. It is a very time consuming process, but the richness of image that this method finally produces is the reason I love it so much.
